君の名は。(Kimi-no na-wa) & "Kojiki"

An animated movie that was released in 2016 and became a huge hit『君の名は(Kimi-no na-wa) 。』

The film depicts the cityscape of the Yotsuya area, and the famous final scene takes place on the staircase of Suga Shrine.

The film made Suga Shrine a popular spot, and it(Suga Shrine) is dedicated to Susanoo (Susanoo-no-Mikoto), the god of storms.

In the "Kojiki", an ancient Japanese book, Susanoo, the storm god, slayed a giant serpent and married Princess Kushinada. Then he traveled to find the best place to build his palace. He came across a land that made him feel “refreshed” and named it Suga.
And then he built his palace there. This shrine, Suga Shrine, derives its name from that land. What a wonderful origin story with a deep connection to the "Kojiki".

btw...

The following is considered the oldest "waka (和歌)", a type of poem, in Japan. It is also the poem that Susanoo recited as he built his palace.
"Yakumo Tatsu(八雲立つ)
Izumo Yaegaki(出雲八重垣)
Tsumagomi ni(妻ごみに)
Yaegaki Tsukuru(八重垣つくる)
Sono Yaegaki wo(その八重垣を)."

Exploring the Wonders of Izumo Taisha<2/2>

I have posted the second installment of the feature on Izumo Taisha Shrine, which is closely related to the "Kojiki" (Records of Ancient Matters).
※Here's the first installment.

4.Remember the principle of two bows, four claps, and one bow!

When visiting shrines in Japan, it is common to perform a ritual of two bows, two claps, and one bow.
However, did you know that at Izumo Taisha Shrine, the ritual consists of two bows, four claps, and one bow?

The reason for this difference is said to be that the four claps represent the four seasons and are offered in prayer for a bountiful harvest and prosperity. Another theory suggests that the four claps show respect to the deities that guard the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west).

Another famous shrine that follows the ritual of two bows, four claps, and one bow is "Usa Jingu" located in Ooita prefecture.

5.You can also approach the Main Hall from the west side.

The main hall of Izumo Taisha Shrine enshrines "Ookuninushi-no-Mikoto," one of the most famous playboys in Japanese mythology. Interestingly, while the main hall faces south, the deity's object of worship faces west. As a result, it is customary to visit the shrine from the west side, where the deity is facing.

It is said that the reason why the deity faces west is to welcome the Eight Million Gods ("八百万神/Yaoyorozu no Kami"), the countless gods who are believed to arrive from Inasa Beach, located about 1 kilometer west of Izumo Taisha Shrine, in the month of October according to the lunar calendar.

6.Discover the hidden power spot of Soga no Yashiro("素鵞社").

The Soga no Yashiro("素鵞社")," located at the back of the main hall, is said to be a hidden power spot of Izumo Taisha Shrine.

The deity enshrined at the Soga no Yashiro is "Susanoo-no-Mikoto."
It is customary to offer the sand collected from Inasa Beach under the floorboard and receive the sacred sand as a blessing to take home.

In addition, don't forget to touch the "Iwakura" stone at Mt. Yakumo, located behind Soga no Yashiro, to receive its power.

7.Don't be fooled by the shimenawa("しめ縄") of the hall of Worship("拝殿")!

When it comes to Izumo Taisha, many people may think of the "Ooshimenawa," which boasts the largest size in Japan. The "Ooshimenawa" measures 13.6 meters in length and weighs 5.2 tons, making it truly impressive!

However, please note that the "shimenawa" is also displayed in the the hall of Worship("拝殿"), which is located near the main hall. To see the "Oshimenawa," which boasts the largest size in Japan, let's go to the "Kaguraden(神楽殿)".

Exploring the Wonders of Izumo Taisha<1/2>

I would like to introduce some preparatory points for visiting shrines that are closely related to the "Kojiki" while also enjoying them visually using Google Street View.

Now, I would like to introduce you to Izumo Taisha(”出雲大社”), where one of the most famous figures in Japanese mythology known for his romantic exploits, Ookuninushi, is enshrined. This shrine is renowned for its matchmaking benefits and for having one of Japan's largest shimenawa ropes!
  1. First, head to Inasa Beach!
  2. Don't forget to visit the Harai Shrine("祓社/はらいのやしろ").
  3. The Higashi-Juukusha Shrines("東十九社/ひがしじゅうくしゃ") are particularly recommended during Kannazuki.
    →the Month of Gods' Residing.
  4. Remember the principle of two bows, four claps, and one bow!
  5. You can also approach the Main Hall from the west side.
  6. Discover the hidden power spot of Soga no Yashiro("素鵞社").
  7. Don't be fooled by the shimenawa("しめ縄") of the hall of Worship("拝殿")!
1.First, head to Inasa Beach!

Let's visit Inasa no Hama("稲佐の浜"), located about 1km west of Izumo Taisha("出雲大社"). Don't wonder why we're heading to the beach. just yet... Let's go check it out to obtain an item useful at the hidden power spot Soga no Yashiro("素鵞社") that I'll introduce later.

Inasa no Hama is a power spot where Takemikazuchi (”武甕槌神”) negotiated the transfer of the country.
It is also a historic beach where the Eight Million Gods ("八百万神/Yaoyorozu no Kami") who landed in Japan are said to have headed to Izumo Taisha from this location in October of the lunar calendar.

Furthermore, at this beach, don't forget to collect "sand," which is useful when visiting Soga no Yashiro, before heading to Izumo Taisha. The "sand" you collect at Inasa no Hama can be used as an offering.

2.Don't forget to visit the Harai Shrine("祓社/はらいのやしろ").

Before visiting the Main Hall, it is important to perform the purification ritual three times♪

The first purification ritual takes place here at "Harai Shrine"!
First, purify yourself here and then cross the "Harai Bridge(祓橋)" located at the foot of the sloping approach.
After passing through the pine tree-lined approach, it is recommended to perform the third purification ritual at the "Temizuya (water ablution pavilion/手水舎)".

Please also click on 'View on Google Maps(Googleマップで見る)' in the image and check the location on the map!
You can also confirm the relevant location on the map.

3.The Higashi-Juukusha Shrines("東十九社/ひがしじゅうくしゃ") are particularly recommended during Kannazuki.
→the Month of Gods' Residing.

In the traditional Japanese calendar, the month of October is commonly known as "Kannazu(神無月)" or "the month without gods." However, at Izumo Taisha Shrine, deities from all over Japan gather for a conference and the shrine holds the "Kamiarizuki" festival. During this time, the deities stay in a building called "Jūkyūsha(十九社)" or the "Nineteen Shrines" for lodging.

Discover the Unique Beauty of "Sarutahiko Shrin"

If we talk about unique appearances in Japanese mythology, one cannot overlook Sarutahiko, who is known for his long nose measuring seven 咫/hand spans (approximately 126cm), towering height of seven 尺/shaku (approximately 210cm), and bright, shining mouth and buttocks.

In the "Kojiki", Sarutahiko appears as a god of guidance when Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended from heaven and opened the way.

Ame-no-Uzume, who accompanied Ninigi, negotiated with the suddenly appearing Sarutahiko, and through this encounter, she later became his wife and changed her name to Sarume-no-kimi.
This is the origin of the name of Sarume Shrine located within Sarutahiko Shrine.

Due to such historical and background circumstances, it seems that more and more people are visiting Sarutahiko Shrine("猿田彦神社") first, saying "Let's be guided in the right direction!" before going to Ise Grand Shrine.

Well then, leaving the details about Sarutahiko Shrine to other bloggers and YouTubers...
Let me give you a little supplementary information about the octagonal directional stone with the "Kodenchi(古殿地)" inscription in the center and the ancient directions engraved around it, which is located in front of the main hall.

After researching, I found that there is no mention of the order of touching or interacting with the directional stone in front of the main hall on the official website of Sarutahiko Shrine.

You can also confirm the relevant location on the map.

However, I found some information online that I would like to share and supplement!
